How long are new hatchling ok without the hen showing them what to eat and drink?

I fed ours wet starter feed in a shallow dish at first, right outside the nest box, where mom and babes can both reach. I wasn't sure they could/would get to the water so it can't hurt to make it a mash so they're getting some water. Now that they're older, they still prefer the mash, particularly when it's made with hot/warm water on these cold mornings.
