How long before they lay?

You won!
Messing in the nests is the best indicator of imminent eggs.

Neither.
Cat food is not good for chickens despite many feeding it.
A good chicken ration and plain water is best.
Mine get grower pellets.
However, since summer grass and bugs-they have not been eating as much pellets.
I throw a small handful of scratch in coop at end of day to entice them into coop.
They have not been real interested in scratch either. They only got into kitten chow when they escaped pasture for yard-and kitten had not emptied his bowl. I don't fill bowl simply because I don't want to feed all the other critters-feral cat, coons, possum etc......he gets about 1/4 cup at a time.
Got a coon in live trap this a.m. and he has a buddy also.
