my chickens are part-time free-rangers, and occasionally a hen will find a nice nesting spot in the woods (which we usually find, if a raccoon or something doesn't find it first)
i just recently i found a nest with four eggs in it, and i'm sure they were all from the same hen. that makes the oldest egg in the nest at least 4, probably 5 days old. the weather's been pretty cool, highs in the 50s or low 60s these past few of days (hey, this is florida) and i'm wondering how quickly a fertilized egg grows an embryo--not being incubated, just chillin out in the woods. how soon do you have to refrigerate a fertilized egg to stop development?
