How Long Can an Egg Be Uncovered & Still Hatch?

One of the 5 eggs that was under my broody bantam must have rolled out from under her this afternoon. When I went to check on her tonight I noticed it wasn't under her and picked it up. It was very cool. This is day 7 that she has been sitting on that egg. I tried candling it but it is a dark egg, and I can't tell whether there are signs of a chick in it or not.

In some posts I read that an egg can be uncovered up to 8 hours and still hatch if put back under the hen.

I'm wondering whether this is dependent upon the stage of the egg? Does anyone know? It would have been about 8 hours the egg had been uncovered, I'm guessing, when I discovered it.

I think when she got back on the nest after taking a break from brooding that she accidentally knocked it out from under her.

I suppose the weather would have something to do with whether or not the egg could still hatch, too? It was about 58 F here this afternoon.

I just checked the weather forecast, and it says the high here today was actually 74 F. I didn't realize it was that warm, and it is now 52.2 F.
