Once a chick pips internally, how long does it have to break through the outside before it suffocates?

After a chick internally pips, it has about 24 hours of air. After that, it has to either externally pip or suffocate.

Wow. Hard to believe that tiny little bit of air can last that long. Guess I won't worry.
