How long can momma be off her nest before the eggs die?

My first broody hen was this September. She got off the eggs once for long enough that they felt cold to the touch. I just KNEW they wouldn't hatch.

They all hatched out. I think the hens know what they are doing.

I think we had a couple of cleavage hatches on here... one actually went to a different forum to talk about it cuz this is after all a family friendly site.

I can tell you for certain that, when I was a wildlife rehabilitator, I carried a baby bird home that way riding my bike home in winter, and the bird survived just fine. This was about a 2 mile trip.

Oh, hey, another rehabber! *High-five* I've done the stick-the-baby-bird-in-the-bra trick a few times now. Quite handy, as it keeps them warm, insulated, dark, and quiet!

I recall walking into a store one time with a little bird in my bra and feeling very silly although certainly no one could tell.
