How long do chickens live?

I've read somewhere here in the forum a couple of years ago that someone had one that was about 17-18 years old. I responded to a post the other day in regards to an ill hen that was 14 years old.

One of the Easter Egger mutts we had as kids lived to be thirteen years old. This was despite the ruptured crop that she developed around five years old: she just walled the site off and it didn't do a thing to her for years. She was the longest-lived of her bunch.

Currently my oldest hen is an Easter Egger/Andalusian cross; she's coming up on 8 years old. She has a twisted foot and I profoundly doubt she's laying any more, but she remains boss hen of the bunch. Next up are our two Speckled Sussex, who are approaching 6 years old. One is hardier than the other, and they both have dreadfully arthritic feet, but they remain avid foragers and extremely personable, and they even lay an egg now and then. The remainder of our flock ranges from 9 months to 4 1/2 years old.

Mutts seem to fare a little better on the average. I've had several purebred hens that keeled over from egg yolk peritonitis at 2-4 years old--that's a really sad thing

well it all depends on the bird its self and how its being raised where its living what its eating because some hens can have stressful laying like i live in canada so its harder on them to lay in the winter time and it gets pretty cold here

How fabulous that you are coming here! My favorite breed right now is the Egyptian Fayoumi. I have 30 of them and love them so much. I am going to try to preserve the breed with no dilution of the pure genetics they have.

I have seen many pictures of Egypt and would love to visit someday.
