How long do they need grit?

must mean this kind of grit, which is mostly oyster shell
I think I remember seeing an oyster shell that looked just like grit, which confused me.

For those that want to offer grit, offer non-soluble grit of the right size for the bird you are feeding it to:

I leave grit out just in case they can't get enough from the soil. I noticed that the soil in their run is compacted right now due to all of the rain.
They should have access to grit if they get extra treats other than commercial feed.
I use these little dishes from tractor supply that hook onto their run or I used a zip tie to secure one for the chickens. The dishes were only available during chick days I guess because I don't see them in the store or on the website. I added the last detail since the dishes don't take up much room - plus it isn't going to hurt to offer the grit separately. They will use it if needed.
