How long do they stay broody?

When hens go broody (I have my Cochins in mind here), how long do they stay that way? If I remove the eggs daily will they eventually just give up, or is "breaking them" of that mood essential?

With my turken, she was broody until I let her hatch some

However, with another bird we put her in jail and took away all nesting material. She kicked it in two days.
