Last spring I had a problem with the feed store running out of chick starter. There's quite a bit there now. I was thinking of buying six or eight bags as a cushion so I wouldn't run out, but wasn't sure if it would keep. Any thoughts? I'd be getting the chicks in early April.

It will keep, if you keep it in a dry place that doesnt draw moisture.

The bags should have dates on them. Unopened and not in extreme heat it's usually something like 4-6months from mill date. Problem is when you buy the bags they may already be many months from mill date. Kept frozen possibly 8months or more. Open and not repackaged to an air tight container it's more like weeks.

WOw, that's a lot of starter. It will keep as long as it is dry and there are no mice. That's my problem, mice.

The problem we had with keeping that many bags was the dang months. I have since cleaned out my HUGE deep freeze and put all the extra livestock feed in there.
