Well folks, this is crazy and I do not know what to do.
At 5:30 this morning, the mama goose woke me up with her chattering. She was off her nest and chatting away. I opened the window and found the stench of rotten egg. I had planed on taking the eggs way today as this is the 38th day. It was an event, but we did manage to get her and her gosling away from her nest.
We discovered a dead, yet partially hatched baby. We hadn't been in any hurry because we just assumed that the eggs were all bad. After seeing the dead guy I cracked open one of the other eggs. MUCH to my surprise, it was not rotten and it contained a seemingly fully developed baby.
We smelled each egg and found one that was indeed rotten.
By now we had already moved the mom and her baby and provided her new nesting. She had been off her eggs for about an hour, perhaps as much as 90 minutes. Not knowing what to do and thinking that these eggs might still be viable, we placed them in the new nest. Mom went into the dog crate and sat near the eggs, not on them. She has been in the crate for about 30 minutes and she's not sitting on the eggs.
Generally, HOW LONG can a mom be off her eggs before they are no longer viable?
Is this over? Is it a lost cause and should I just toss the eggs?
We own a used incubator that we have never used.... should we give it a shot or is it too late?
