How long does it take a roo to start properly mounting and crowing?

I have a young buff Orpington roo he's just beginning to crow and he's trying to mount he's my breeding rooster I love the buff Orpington breed I'm getting a female same age about 4 or 5 months old I'm gonna breed them to have pure buffs next spring I also have barred rock, silver laced Wyandotte, Brown isa, and Rhode island reds ,I'm gonna make my own sex links as well but that's the idea for now thanks

I have a 5 month old BO as well he has been crowing since he was about 14-15 weeks old but it didn't take him long to get the hang of it as far as the mounting goes he is still trying to get the hang of it I think it just depends on how willing the hen is right now the only one he can manage to get on is my red sex link but I think its cuz she is the only one that is really ready for it she is the only one that is laying at the moment but all of mine were hatched the same day so I think it just all depends on which hen will let him

Also I've been looking for info on barred rocks being broody have any of you had experience with this? I'm wanting baby chicks next spring they are currently 1 month old from tractor supply .

Generally BR's are not a broody hen...occasionally it happens but you most likely will need to get a broody breed hen or incubator. Silkies are good brood hens...I have a light Sussex hen that has been a good mamma last 2 springs.

Well that sucks hopefully the silver laced Wyandottes will be I still have hope I have hens that go broody but the problem is they aren't good layers I get a egg every now and again and that's not good enough so if like a breed that's self sufficient

you mentioned that you are getting a BO hen which are said to be a broody breed and that is why I picked my 2 BO hens because they are suppose to be a broody breed but I guess only time will tell

Update! He is crowing properly and mounting hens . I have already set some eggs from a rhode island red and an unknown I think she's a bantam tho .

Also does he look like of good quality to you guys? and I hope he gets bigger he seems a little small still. I like the large breeds he's still way bigger than the rhode island red which is older than him

The hen that's in the box is the the unknown she's small has feathered feet and Lays small cream colored eggs I hope she's a broody too!

Just asking this to clarify. You want to raise Pure BO chicks when you get your BO hen. Meanhile you are preparing for multiple mixed breeds from RR, BR, SLW, Brown Isa, and an unknown hen mating with your BO rooster. Is that the plan?

Yea I'm not breeding for SOP. i just like the breed and im not only going to have just buff orpingtons. thats why I have the other breeds. I also sell chicks on Craigslist. And the mixed breeding is part of the plan I give chicks to family members and stuff
