HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE HUBBY TO HATE THE HOBBY?

My boyfriend at the time was MAD! I told him it was my house and well really, I have been talking about getting chickens for over a year now, so really, i told him you knew one of these days it would happen. He wasnt too thrilled about the amount of money i spent on the coop. Now that i have the time and money I am ALL about it! too bad for him..he's now an ex. If it coomes down to him or my animals...well we know who has to go.

When my husband starts grumbling, I ask him if he enjoyed his fresh omelet he had for breakfast. He loves eggs cooked in every way and eats the majority of the ones we get. He loves making french toast with the bantam eggs, because they don't have as much egg white so you don't get the big gob of egg white on your bread. Of course you have to use twice as many eggs...

The only problem I've had so far is he complains the back room is starting to smell. Time to clean out the boxes and no more compaints.

My hubby is totally into this too.
I'm still new at it and didnt realize how much fun this can be! I am addicted!

My children and hubby are just as excited as I am. We got them for the kids for easter (8 chicks, 8 kids and 1 duck) and all helped and built the coop for them while they stayed inside under the heat lamp... I really believe it brings families together.

Cant wait to start gettin eggs!

Oh... my hubby mentioned the other day that a goat pen would look great over by the duck coop!

Off and on over the last couple of years I had mentioned to my husband that I would like a few chickens to raise for eggs. We are both procrastinaters, but hubby agreed that this was a good idea.

Well, Christmas rolled around and we are in a new house with 5 acres of land and the time was right. I kept putting off ordering chicks until the coop was done, and us being procrastinaters, it wasnt' getting done. I gave my husband a deadline and ordered the chicks. A few chicks for eggs ended up being 42 (20 for eggs and 20 for meat) a number decided on by my husband and father-in-law. Because you know that half of them will probaly die anyway. I'm happy to say that the 40 we ordered and the 2 extra that the hatchery threw in are all alive and well at 6 weeks old!

Well chicks arrived and hubby finished the coop a few days later, he even ran power to it for the heat lamps, he cut a window into it for venting when it started getting to warm in the coop, and now he has obtained an old corn crib he plans on attatching to the coop for a run (he got this idea from a field trip to Osborne National Park he took with my son - they kept their large birds like eagles in the corncribs). He is now talking about building nesting boxes.

He usually beats me out to the coop in the morning to check on the babies and open up their window. He also questions me daily on my care of them. Which drives me nuts, considering he doesn't cuddle them or pet him (I guess he just doesn't feel it's a manly thing to do?)! Tonight when I mentioned that I was thinking of getting some more chicks all he said was Why?

So all in all, I'm pretty lucky.

1. Price of 42 chicks: $50
2. Price of two waterers: $24
3. Price of bottle of minerals and vitamins to put in water: $3
4. Price of plastic feeder for chicks: $5
5. Price of bigger metal feeder for growing chicks: $22
6. Price of two heating lamps: $
7. Price of three heating lamp bulbs: $
8. Price of garbage can with lid to keep feed in: $
9. Ungoing cost of feed: $
10. Hours of labor invested:
11. Cost of chicken plucker wife wants to buy: $150
12. Keeping wife happy and content: PRICELESS

I had birds before I had hubby.. He doesnt understand why but never really complained too much... Course back thenI just had some laying hens.. .. Now he is more or less "What do you need all those Da** birds for".. He stays on his side of the property. He doesnt go out to my side... If he does he has to keep his mouth shut or I start to point out all HIS hobbies.. Such as the 7 quads, and the rather large assortment of rifles we own.. 14 440 engines laying around.. Assorted vehicles etc.. Trust me his "hobbies" far out weigh my measley birds..
Now as much as he loves to gripe about my birds, how expensive they are, why do you need so many, why this why that... He is the FIRST one to complain if I get store bought eggs, and he arranged to get me BOTH my sportsmans.. Probably so he could then have more stuff to gripe about I suppose LOL...
I think its just his way of having something to gripe about in case HE does something wrong LOL.. Such as the new fuel tank he bought without so much as mentioning it to me.. Im talking 850 bucks just so he could haul and extra 20 more gallons of fuel... Or like the time he brought home 4 rifles... (Was too good a deal to pass up) ....
Oh but let someone show an interest in the birds such as one of his buddies wanting a duck for dinner.. or a friend wants some laying hens... All the sudden its all WE, and OUR LOL... And when he dont think I can hear you should here him talk about birds like he hand raised those buggers himself LOL... Perhaps he learned from osmosis?
Over all I wish he was more supportive, It does get kind of old hearing him gripe about how expensive they are, specially when I KNOW he only says that crap when hes being a snotbutt... But when it comes right down to it.. GUess who is grabbing up one of those rifles if a stray dog comes in or a coyote?? Yep you guessed it.. HIM... And when I need tools.. GUess who brings me home what I need? Such as the Christmas gift of all cordless tools so I can build coops easier

Or the pair of saw horses, and the wood etc..
And he even sneaks peeks into the incubator (clear door) when there are chicks hatching, tells me if a brooder lamp is off in case maybe it is supposed to be on... I think he secretly likes the birds... Maybe hes afraid if he lets on that he likes them - I might get MORE

my wife started out with 12 chicks, in the first 4 months 2 died so she got 3 more adults. a few months later she got 6 more adults. I used to work 2 weeks out of town then come home for 2 weeks. you could tell when she hadnt gotten out much, she'd be clucking and cooing to her girls. now I've gotten in on it with 3 turkeys, and expecting to get a couple more soon maybe even going to try sneeking in a couple of pheasants.

Mine got me started in chickens!!!!

We had chickens when I was growing up & I hated them! I was scared to death of any kind of bird. My next older brother would chase me with as many roosters he could hold by their feet & let them peck me.

When I started coming over here, DH had some free ranging chickens & a pair of peacocks, not to mention the emus!!

I wouldn't go near any of them. Then the peacock got to where he would come close to me & fan his tail out, and strut around when I came over at feeding time. I would toss him some of the horse feed I would have in a bucket.

Then, he asked if I wanted some chicks....I looked at him like he was crazy. He had an Amerauacana, & she was so pretty.
I figured if I was going to have to tend to chickens, they better be pretty ones!
So, he got me 50 Ameraucana chicks to start with. I would feed & water them, watch them , but wouldn't pick one up to save my soul. He was patient with me, and after awhile, I got to where I would pet one. Then he got me to help catch them when we had to move them....and the addiction started!!!

I now keep about 500 chickens!! They jump up onto my back if I'm bent over, & I had one Fawn Duckwing Bantam rooster that would fly up on my shoulder & go with me to do chores.

I even pet one of the emus every now & then.

It really is an addiction....my Mom thinks I'm crazy!
