how long does it take to lay an egg?

Congrats on the egg and that is a beautiful photo of your daughter and 1st egg. Definitely have the photo framed and blow the egg out to save the shell!

Yeah, and it was her chicken that layed it.

The kids were as excited as me about that first egg.

Thanks.

my bo will sit on the nest for a few hours sometimes before she lays, but she usually lays in the late afternoon so she might go in early to get out of the heat before she lays.

You don't want to dilute their diet out too much by offering too many treats especially since they will need the nutrition in their feed even more once they start to lay.

Porridge (made from ground corn) is fine without the sugar and they don't need salt in it either if you are adding any which is normally what we do.

whatdacluck is not giving them porridge made from ground corn its oats as in oatmeal
I wouldn't add sugar to anything I gave the chooks if there is some in it I can't take it out but there is no benifit for chickens or other animals to have sugar or salt

You're right! I didn't read the section in brackets. Thanks for correcting me.
