how long does the egg song last each time?

It varies. 5 to 30 minutes. Some days I never hear it. Most days it goes on for about 20 minutes.

It's just a method to reconnect. In the wild, a flock would continue to forage when a hen went back to lay in the nest. When she was finished, she'd call out "Hey, where are you guys?" They respond, "Here we are".
Even though they're in the same pen, they continue to do so. It's genetic. They can't help themselves.

Mine lasts couple of minutes or so, I got 10 layers but only 3 does it. As if they say "Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

haha cool, i see. so if i have 4 hens then i could expect a fairly loud morning if they all chime in? I have 3 wyandottes and 1 ameraucana. its a suburban area..........

Some gals are in love with their own voices. They sing the egg song if: they have just laid an egg, they are going to lay an egg, they have thought about an egg, or if their BFF has, will or may be thinking about laying an egg. Sometimes they have LOTS of BFF. Then, there are the gals who go in the nest, pop out an egg, and sneak back out before they've even been missed. Then, there are the psuedo eggs songs, that are more of a greeting or sometimes a warning. I look at it this way: my flock, including a rooster are not as annoying in the noise department as a lot of poorly managed dogs.
