Hi all,

My girls are 18wo this coming weekend and some of them are getting noticeably pink around the face. Not properly red yet but on their way.

Just wondering how much longer till they are laying? I mainly want them laying in time for Mahonri's Easter hatch which I am hoping is enough time but I've never paid attention to how long between starting to go pink and actually laying.

They will be 24wo by Easter hatch setting date so at least some of them should be laying in time. (I hope

Thanks in advance for any info

What kind of pullets are they??

My production reds (2 out of 4) started laying 2 weeks ago at 18 weeks of age. Monday 1 of my Dominiques started laying at 20.5 weeks of age. Still waiting for the other 2 Production reds, 4 more Dominiques and 4 EE's to start.

I am excited about the Easter Hatch also!!

Given the Barred Rock in your avatar, are we to assume you mean BR pullets?

If so, they take 24 weeks, but again, these are merely averages. There is no way to predict with precision, as nature will simply take its course. Easter is very late this year, almost two months away. I'd guess you'll be just fine.

It really just depends on the bird. I have EEs that were about 28-30 weeks and my barred rock took 38 weeks! They will lay when they are ready unless they are the production breeds. leghorns, sex links, RIR usually start from 18-20 weeks. usually......I've had 4 sex links since I started keeping chickens and they were all around 20 weeks.

I think I understand OP question:

When a pullet's face starts to turn from flesh to pink to red, Is bird going to lay soon?

Does facial reddening have any impact on egg laying or readiness for egglaying?

I ask as well. My pullets are in the same age range. On a couple, their faces are turning to a bright red....I can only assume that laying is right around the corner.

I have EE's, brahmas and 1 cochin...all bantams. One started laying at about 16 weeks (about 4 weeks ago) and through the last few weeks, the rest have also started laying...so now at age 20 weeks, all are laying for a couple weeks now (the cochin started last week)

I also heard that the comb color tells you when they are ready, but some of mine have practically no color at all and they are all laying.

People tell me that mine started laying early because I have a roo?.
