How long should I give Sulmet to work?

Bubbly eyes, snotty nose, raspy breathing, some sneezing. No bad smell from beak area. First one, now three have same symptoms. Eyes swollen and faces pale. Eyes not shut though. They stretch their neck a little to breath. They are still eating and drinking. I have them on Sulmet since yesterday morning (24 hrs now) and don't really see a change yet except that I have a 3rd one with it this morning. I have also been putting a little Vet RX around their beak and nostrils. Seems that after I apply the Vet RX around their beak and nostrils that their waddles and cones become much redder and they perk up after about 30 minutes

Checked under the roost this morning and looked to me like the poo was normal.

Could this just be a cold that has to run it's course.

How long should I give the Sulmet to work? I have some Tylan 50 ready to go if Sulmet is not working.

Can I do the Tylan and Sulmet at the same time for the 3 sick ones?

How old are they? That sounds like what I have been going through with mine. It sounds like a respiratory problem and I don't think that Sulmet will do anything for that. I would stop the Sulmet and try the Tylan if I were you.

They are about 5 to 6 months old. I have had them for about 2 months.

1 rooster and 2 hens, Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. I had drive a long way to get them and I was planning on breeding. I hope it's nothing serious, These are hard to come by.

Some of the other are sneezing now and then but none of them are pale or having any eye problems or paleness. So far, anyway.

They sleep in a coop at night with sand and DE on the floor. They have a huge outside run 15x70 then free range when I am home.

I do not treat for respiratory disease due to the carrier type (herpes type, really) nature of many of them, but here is a helpful symptom chart from Welp that may help you.

Sulmet, as a sulfa antibiotic, treats a number of respiratory illnesses caused by bacteria; however, there are several respiratory illnesses caused by viruses. In general, tylan is a more effective antibiotic, but it really depends on the causative agent.

Try to narrow the symptoms down to a more specific diagnosis, or get a culture done to knwo what is best to treat with, if anything.

May have good news tonight.

I went to start the Tylan 50 injections. While parting the feathers I noticed little red bugs crawling around. Then I got to watching the others and they were picking at themselves pretty bad. i then grabed up one that wasn't showing respiratory signs. Looked under his wing and little red bugs went everywhere.

I think the red mights are my main problem and maybe weakening the birds for the secondary resp. problem.

Does this sound logical.

New to chickens but learning fast.

BTW, any ideas on getting the red mites under control. I be browsing BYC over in the mite department now.

I went ahead with the 1/2cc of Tylan 50 in the 3 birds and put clean water in the waterer for the rest.

The mites may indeed be the entire problem. Treat immediately, as they can kill your birds.
