How long should I give the chick to hatch after piping?

Good job!

You may need to put a little bit of neosporin on her navel/belly button if it looks like a bump (suspecting because there was a little yolk left) to keep it clean and free of infection.

On the curled toes - I have fixed some bad feet before. but you will have to be diligent and make a cast for the foot every day for about 3 days or until it looks better. I fixed 1 foot that was so bad.... the chick was shipped. it was walking on the ankle like a peg leg with the foot twisted/broken, upside down underneath the peg leg. the ankle joint was swollen huge from being walked on and the middle toe was broken.

I set it in a cast (need a helper/2nd pair of hands for this) using electrical tape and light cardboard. you can also use band-aids but they stick to the skin worse than electrical tape. if you use band-aids, use baby-oil to take off the sticky when you remove it and go verryy slow. use hand sanitizer to remove the baby oil before re-casting the foot. I use tweezers to adjust the toes to be straight when I stick them down.

here is a picture of the foot I made for that guy :)
I WISH I took a before photo. his foot healed PERFECTLY I was so proud ;)
he wore sandals for 4 days.

Thanks for all your help. I beginning to have more faith that thinks can be rescued and fixed up. Just gotta make it through the first week. I had a weak chick and he made it to only 7 days.

If you have sav-a-chick electrolytes or probiotics, either would be appropriate here since the chick went through some extra stress.
since it missed out on some yolk nutrients, you could also give it chicken vitamins (like poly vi sol or NutriDrench) if you have it on hand.
both of these things would increase the chick's chances of surviving past the first week if administered diligently.
good luck! keep me posted!

Thanks for the advise. I apreciate all the help. The chick was pretty strong when I got her out. the feathers on her head was stuck to the shell where she pipped at the bottom but the blood and yolk did not escape and dried up and her head was stuck to the shell. No head movement, no piping. Maybe the chick had bad luck with egg position and not that it was too weak. Here are a couple of pictures of rescued chick. Last picture is day 2. I will give electrolytes and probiotics now. Again thanks for all the advise.

you're welcome! sounds like she is doing fantastic, and wow she is so cute :) like you said, there are many other factors that can cause a chick not to hatch (getting stuck as you saw) unrelated to weakness. it all comes down to your eggs, your incubator, what went on during incubation, how many times the incubator was opened turning lockdown, etc etc. only you know whether or not those things happened, only you know your eggs, and can make the right decision :)

Well found that the egg tray for the bigger chickens were too big and barely turned the eggs at all. I tried the quail tray and it actually turned more. I just thought that since my serama eggs were a little on the bigger side that I would use it. Well, I got a Hova Bator Genesis 1588 now so I am now using that but I will try the brinsea again but use the quail egg tray and adjust it for a bigger angle of turn. I used what they suggested but I gotta do what works for me I guess. The Brinsea Advance works like a washing machine so it goes back and forth which I thought only covered a quarter turn each time. So I will give it another shot and see what happens. I am a beginner. So far out of 5 tries, 2 times I hatched out 1 out of 7. The other two times that I had all infertile eggs. And this time I had 4 die in egg, two infertile, and this rescue. Well I am learning and my rooster is doing better at breeding; however, he just started molting so, I don't think this will help his cause.

how interesting, I wonder why the chicken egg turner only turned chicken eggs so slightly..

I think you have a great attitude towards it, taking something away from each experience and learning more and more every time.

hens stay fertile for at least 14 days, some say even 1 month, after being mated by a rooster. I personally have set eggs from a hen who was with a rooster 2 weeks earlier and they were fertile and hatched! so just because he is moutling, the girls should still be fertile for a little while yet.

good luck with your new incubator, it sounds like a nice one.

hey if you want some reading material, both links in my signature I highly recommend. I re-read the goose one every time I incubate, there is so much information there, it takes a while to sink in.
