How long should I keep warming light on?

As weeks go by do they still need 24/7 light? I have mine on 12hr light and a heat pad under them for when it's off!

Light, they do not need at night at all. Heat is another matter. On cool nights, until the chicks develop enough feathers to keep in their body heat, they need heat augmentation.

But by the beginning of the third week, chicks will not need heat at all during the day as long as it's above 70F or 25C.

The sooner you allow chicks to wean themselves off their heat source, including a heating pad, the better off they will be.

What if the temp outside is 85-90 degrees, can we turn the light off during the day and just use it at night when temps drop?

We use a dimmer switch like this. http://m.homedepot.com/p/Lutron-Cre...Z05CZLGX3u2P-hDvR5jWIxoCDIbw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
Makes temp. control so much easier then moving the lights up and down. Watch the chicks and slide switch up or down as needed.
For your case just slide it to off in the mornings and bump it on at night.
Great for getting heat just right.
