How long should the lamp on at night?

Interesting discussion. I think the bottom line is that there is no one right or wrong way. Each of us does things that work for them. Chickens seem to easily adapt to whatever schedule one creates. Based on the feedback received, I'm going to light both the coop as well as the run / pen where their food and water is. And that makes sense as I was wondering what would happen if only the run had the lights. Either they would not come out at all until there was daylight or that they would come out, eat and then go back into their coop. That would not serve the purpose of having the lights to begin with.

I have a 125w lamp in the coop. Turn on around 5pm when sun set. And how long should I leave it on?
I have a WiFi switch. Should I set up automatic on and off for how many hours?
Thank you

Your light should come on in the AM and then go off in the morning but only after enough time has elapsed to give your flock 14 to 15 hours of total light, counting natural and supplemental artificial lighting. This way your birds will be going to roost or bed at the natural time of Sundown.
