How long to keep in Jail??

new chick 202

LOL! 2 jail birds...

I didn't think a week would do it. And seriously, she is well fed and cared for - just very lonely. At least this time for my 2 juveniles will build their confidence for when the Hateful Helen comes back in to torment them. The 2 adult birds they are dealing with is giving them a good dose of "sorority freshman hell week" orientation to the coop life. Boy I sure hope I don't come back as a chicken in my next life....!!

Hateful Helen and Naughty Rosie - is this the chicken world's version of the bad girls club?!

No. It's not. Doing this might help keep one from attacking YOU, because you've shown it you are the boss. But as far as keeping it from attacking others, nope. They don't really get embarrassed anyway.

So today Hateful Helen, the jail bird, is going to be allowed to free range with the others. It's been a solid week or more that she's been jailed. She can hear the others but can't see them. Hoping for a behavior changer.

?? about merging birds. 1 of the 2 juveniles is getting squatty - I say she will be laying within the week. Does the acceptance by the older birds come more quickly when the new ones come of laying age??

I think I may be a believer now. Hateful Helen was released from jail. She free ranged with the younger 2 birds without incidence. Dusk came and they went into the coop. And LOL but the 2 juveniles are roosting right beside ol Hateful! Tomorrow will tell whether or not Hateful Helen breaks her probation!

I had two hens that were bullies. I caught one hen really wailing away on one of the pullets. Originally I did take them out of the flock for about a week. When I did put them back with the flock one was ok but the other was still being a real bully so I took her back out and put her back in jail for another week then let her back in with the flock and she started in again. She was so intent on a pullet that she didn't know I was there. I had a hose in my hand and gave her a good squirt with the hose. She wasn't expecting it as she was really into beating up the pullet. Boy did she ever jump off when she got hit with the water. She ran into the coop and didn't come back out for a long time. I caught her a few more times and always had the hose handy and squirted her when she was being aggressive. She eventually quit bullying. That is when I used the hose and caught her off guard. I guess she eventually knew if she kept it up she would get squirted. She would block the pop door and keep the pullets out so they couldn't get to the feed. I put a second pop door in the coop and another feeder out in their run. She couldn't guard both pop doors.
