how long to keep marbles in waterer?

I have one of those red plastic bases that you can screw a mason jar onto. The chicks (24 of them) are drinking the water so fast that I have to refill the jar very often at it's quite time consuming to take the marbles out and clean off the poo, and then put them back in... not to mention picking out all the pine shavings. How old do the chicks have to be before they don't need the marbles anymore? Thanks!

What are the marbles for? To keep them from drowning??

I've never used them.... I've never lost a chick to drowning in a waterdish either....

I dont run marbles anymore either. If you have the quail size base, and set it at the opposite end of your brooder heat source, I dont feel marbles are needed.

I have a chick waterer, so it apparently is big enough based on other peoples' stories....
