How long to wait after hearing peeping?

I lost my first batch of eggs.

Now my 2nd batch is due. I heard the chicks peeping but see no sign of pipping. It has been 6 hrs. I tried to score the top of the eggs, but I don't know if I should help or what I am doing. On my last batch there was one little one that pipped but then did no more. I read that you are not suppossed to help them at all. So I didn't and he died. I felt very sad and guilty! So now I am worried. Please advise this city farmer...anyone???

I wouldnt really mess with nature. Sometimes trying to help them kills them most the time in my experience...

but hopefully more opionions. I dont want you to just take my word if somone else has had more success...

Make sure your temp is right around 100 and the humidity is over 60% and let them do it on their own. Could be up to a day before you see the buggar. It just means they are getting ready and geared up to break through! Patience!!!

Not sure what you mean about scoring the egg, really DON'T touch the eggs or go in the bator at all!!

I went through the same thing this morning. I have two out right now and 1 more piped then 13 more to go. Just keep waiting for the pip I think thats all you can do. Good luck!

I am so sorry you had such a bad time with the other hatch.

I too have suffered helplessly while fighting the battle of to help or not to help. It's so hard to resist and the problem is that there is no one answer. I have had chicks die because I waited too long and I have had some die because I was too inexperienced to know the difference. Trouble is that experience is something you can't get any other way but by trial and error and you learn as you go. It's unfortunate that with hatching the stakes are so high.

If it has only been 6 hours then you are fine. Stay calm and give them more time. I have had them take up to 24 hours to pip after peeping was heard.
Good luck with the hatch and try not to open the bator

Could take up to 24 hours till they pip (peeping in the shell is a good sign) !! What day are they on ? Whats you hum at ?? Keep the bator closed (I know it's hard) everytime you open it your putting the hatch at risk !!

Thanks Everyone! Tommorrow is actually day 21. I am just a worrier, I guess. Thank you all so much for your good advice and I will distract myself. My incubator is where it should be with Temp and humidity. I am just anixious to see them after I hear their sweet peeps.

I know what you mean. I am on pins and needles. One is out and two others are working hard....

I will tell you that I helped one of my dad's quail, but he was the first to pip and the last to hatch...about 2 days later than everyone else. Thank goodness I peeled him out. He had dried to his shell...we gave him a warm bath with a paper towel and back to the 'bator he went to finish drying...But it took 3 days of waiting before we deemed it an emergency...

If you hear peeping, it is a good sign if tomorrow is day 21. Did you make any ajustments to your incubation for this hatch, if not, you may have the same problems, what caused the last hatch to fail?. At this point, it is best to wait and do not mess with the eggs any more. If they are going to hatch they will hatch by themselves!

As of 12:00, I have 2 new little chicks!!! They are really strong and healthy!! I hope to add pics soon!
