I was wondering how long it usually takes for the mother hen to let the baby chicks go off on their own? I have a silkie who has one baby chick, who is almost 6 weeks old. She has gone broody again! The baby gets upset and gets up in the nest box with her mom and tries to get under her wing for comfort. The hen is more focused on laying on that one egg I let her keep.
Is this a normal age for the mom to let the baby go off more on their own? It upsets me a bit when I see the baby trying to snuggle with the mom and crying for her and the hen doesn't give in to the chick.

Silkie moms are great. They allow their chicks to hang around the nesting box until the chicks get tired of it.

I have six chicks that are pretty much on their own now. Their silkie mom has gone broody pretty steady now and her chicks are roosting together without mom and running the place without mom.

I think they are about 8 weeks now.

When the mom is done with chick, she will chase it away- peck at it. I'm curious, has your broody laid between hatching and brooding again? Ususally when they start to lay again, they are ready for chicks to be on their own.

Yes she has been laying. She started laying eggs about 2 weeks ago.
She doesn't peck her baby, but you can tell she is wanting her time alone with her egg.
