How long until your overwhelmed or tired of poultry

Had five ish years now and I can't imagine life without my girls. I may downsize a little bit but I'll never not have chickens even if I have to have them moved into my room with my death bed Why didn't I discover chickens when I was still young?

I started with 20 and it quickly became not so much fun with already being very busy. The only reason I had 20 was because a friend was suppose to take more than half but did not have his coop or run ready and did not seem to be going to get it ready. It was either too hot or too cold for him to work on it. I told him it must need to be exactly 74.5F for him to do anything lol I finally just went over and did it for him. Now, I have 7 and it is perfect for me. I have no problem with them. They are healthy and excellent layers. I have everything set up so that I usually only go to collect eggs and feed and water every 3-5 days. I do go down sometimes in between to check on them or give them something out of the garden. Collecting eggs, feed and water, scooping poop from trays only takes a few minutes a couple times a week. The poop is great for my garden, too.

The funny thing is that I am not a big egg eater. I use them from time to time but mostly give them away, which is alright, too. It is a pretty cheap way to give something to your friends and neighbors that they really appreciate.

I do get bored with things quickly (adult ADD I am sure lol) but as long as it does not get a lot more than it is I do not see getting out of it any time soon.

Seems like people have a limited interest in most hobbies. How long for poultry?

Blame it on chicken math, keep 5 or 6 not too much trouble, get over 25 things begin to pile up, How then to reduce back? Really hard, wow can’t let her go been here too long, hmmm, can’t let her go, good egg layer, and so it goes.

As for why I'm on the forum, well, as long as I have them they're my responsibility and I need to care for them the best that I'm able with the tools I am given.

Never, poultry are the one static thing I really enjoy.
Even when I'm old and senile I'll probably have imaginary ones.

I’m at a crossroads at the moment!
ive had chickens for 7 years. Was looking for something to do and started with 4. Yep you know what happened Im now up to 40 and I sell eggs to a few friends and family.
Right now tho they seems to be a tremendous burden worms bumblefoot jelly belly on and on. So I’m considering dropping down to 12 or less and see what happens. And about 5 Cornish cross in the fall.

My hubby and I were sitting out near our coop today watching our girls (we have thirteen hens: 4 Australorps (4yrs old), 6 Buff Orpingtons (2 yrs old), and 3 Blue Orpingtons (4 mos old)) as they enjoyed a fresh head of Napa Cabbage. While were watching them negotiate who would get the goodies first, I mused, "I wonder if I will ever get tired of having chickens?" My husband laughed out loud and said, "Never!" That made me laugh, too - he knows me so well.

I cannot imagine our home and yard without our girls. Yes, it is a lot of work, is messy, and when chickens bully each other, get sick, or pass away, is challenging and sad. But, I am just committed to making it work and when I need to make adjustments to make it easier for me or them, I just figure stuff out (I recently reconfigured the coop and run so it would be completely enclosed and 100% walk-in so that as I age I can still get in and out easier and it is easier to clean).

My girls give me purpose and they also have a purpose: they eat our food scraps, eat insects, help me turn the yard when needed, provide us with delicious eggs, and provide us with endless laughter with their antics and personalities. I am in love.

My profile photo is of one of our original girls, Dee Dee and the first egg she laid. Dee Dee lived until she was 10 years old and helped raise the rest of the flock. What a joy.

I have to hang here if I call myself Daddy bird or my wife MOCM (mean ole chickie mamma ) anywhere else they just don't understand me and I"m labeled (labels are so mean) the crazy cicken guy. And really if they knew me they'd know I have Ducks too!

I sometimes will start getting overwhelmed/tired of them at least once year. I usually need a vacation, but hey, who doesn't need a vacation from something they do every day? Then after the vacation, I'm all good with them again.
