Hi everyone, we had a broody hatch one chick out in a staggered hatch. Once she abandoned the nest, we put the eggs in the incubator to see what would happen. Give it two weeks (so long!) and now we have another baby!

I tried to pop her underneath the mom tonight and the mom totally freaked out! She got all puffy and wasn't having any of this new chick business. Any advice? I am worried this little guy may be the only one to hatch out so I would really like the mom to take care of it with the other one.

I hope you didn't leave the chick with the Hen, she'll kill it. Make up a brooder with a heating pad, there's a thread = MHP by Blooie. You can use a plastic container, line it with potty paper or old towels. Don't use newspaper as it's "slippery" and can cause leg issues. Put a mirror (reflection will make it think it's got a friend) and cuddly/cozy stuffed animal. If you can call around the feed stores, it anyone has chicks close in age, get a couple. Pick up some Chick Starter and couple packets of Save A Chick (vitamin & electrolyes). In the mean time you can read up on "integrating" the chicks to the Hen & her chick.

How many more eggs do you have?
Have you candled to see how many are viable?

No, we put her under the heat lamp in a makeshift brooder for the night with a stuffed rabbit.

We have 3 more eggs and in all the excitement I haven't candles them yet. Last time I candled, 5 days ago or so there where 2 that I had hopes for and 2 that I was skeptical about.

I am looking into getting her friends now.
