How loud are turkeys?

We have a friend that raises turkeys and they are very very loud. Anytime you go by there pen the toms start going off "gobble gobble gobble" loud. Is this something that is typical of turkeys, are the poults quieter? Where they just going crazy because someone new was looking at them? Hubby was thinking about getting a few (3) turkeys and wanted to gather some more opinions.

We have ducks and our female can quack as loud as our roosters could crow... is there noise level close to female ducks and roosters or different?

I don't own any, but our friend owns several... I don't know their official name, but I call them the "Drum Turkeys" because not only do they gobble, but they have a really deep drum like sound. It's crazy sounding! I don't know that I've ever heard a quiet turkey.

This is all coming from someone who likes turkeys to eat... otherwise they creep me out a little.

I have not had a tom but I had two hens that I raised from 3 weeks until about 28 weeks (Thanksgiving) and they were super quiet.

I have 3 Narragansetts. The tom gobbles occasionally in response to surprising noises ("shock gobble" my hunter BIL tells me). My hens chirp and make quiet noises when they are following me around or trying to persuade me to give them extra treats. I have noticed (since I don't have many visitors) that all three become alarmed and much louder if someone they don't know comes on the property and wanders down around the pens. The dogs and goats have no apparent effect on them at all. Overall I wouldn't say they're loud- the demanding ducks and competing roos are much louder.

I wouldn't say they are any louder than a rooster.

Mine are pretty quiet. Not as loud as the ducks. The tom only gobbles at loud or strange sounds. The hen can be a little loud in the morning when she is excited, but still not as loud as the ducks. All in all I find them to be pretty quiet. I love all the sounds the hen makes.

My first 10 poults were LOUD! Then we realized that it was just every time we opened the front door that they were talking loud to us. We thought they were loud all the time, but turns out they were calling us over. When we went over they quieted down right away. That's how friendly they were. They are "talking" to you.

But if you are thinking turkeys will be quiet, that is not necessarily the case. During hatching season, my hens make a lot of early morning noise...trying to find each other after they've each been off at a nest. Or, one that was sitting on the nest has disociated from the flock and when the rest see her, they chirp chirp chirp very loud because she is now a "stranger" turkey. grrrr.

My turks only gobble when there's some strange sound or some strange person running around. When Jefferson gets out and wanders around the farm they all chirp at her to come back and of course she has to chirp back to tell them all about the wondrous things she's finding, etc, etc, etc,....but like Steve said it's no louder than the chickens.

What you heard, is what you'll get. I love it, but they do tend to "shock gobble" a lot, meaning and sound , or visual stimulus will make them gobble, and whne 1 does it, they'll all do it. Hens go both ways, usually not much out of them til breeding til, then you'll get a lot of clucking and purring. But like Steve said, nothing any worse than chickens or duck hens. I actaully like it, them and the peafowl SCREAMS!

Thank everyone! I know my duck is crazy loud. She thinks that she is an alarm clock and stands next to the pond quacking LOUD every morning.

I think she might be worse then our roos.

I don't think that the turkey's gobble travels like duck quacks or rooster crows. I haven't heard what the females sound like but I do love that gobble from the males.
