I have 18 Silver Appleyards in the incubator now. I saw on another post that the ducks are really LOUD! and I'm worried b/c we live pretty close to a neighbor. How loud do they get, and if they are crazy quackers, what breed would you suggest that remains a bit quieter? I know muscovies are quiet, but I'm not sure they are the breed for me.

Pekins are almost car horn loud, I would bet that applyyards would be similar. My runners are nearly as loud. My Buff Orphington is much quieter and calmer. She can quack but it is more subdued and infrequent. THe Pekins are seriosly loud ducks and I have neighbors a quarter mile away who asked if I had ducks.

My female Rouen was extremely loud when she felt threatened or was separated from her mate. Otherwise, left to free range, she was a quiet duck--but when she went off, she was louder than my rooster.

Yeah, my Pekin is LOUD too. My Campbells are always making a ruckus, and they're pretty loud, as are the Runners...
My new Call ducks have just got their voices in, and I'd say they're not quite as loud as the Pekin, BUT much higher-pitched, so it sort of pierces though the air.

Anyways, the duck pens are way off on the edge of our yard, practically in the woods, and when they get going, you can hear them inside the house, even when all the doors and windows are shut tight! We're on 7 acres, our neighbor is on something like 45, he's far enough away that we can't see his house, and he can hear all my ducks from his house at feeding time!
