How low should I put the nesting box?

My hens hated the bucket nests. I have nests similar to yours in the coop but none of my birds use them anymore since I installed a nesting box outside. I got a used dog house off the side of the road and took the roof off, set it up on its side and installed this inside. I put a tree stump next to it so they can hop up and that's all they use now. One of my Sussex's even tried to brood in it.

I don’t think my 2 other hens mind the buckets and the smallest hen once really liked it and slept in there when I first got her, she stopped laying in October and just recently started and after she started she didn’t really show any interest in it.😊

They may not like the sharp edges they have to step on to get into the bucket nests. You might try cutting up an old hose, slitting it along its length, and attaching it to the cut edges to make a lip around the opening of the buckets where the chickens have to step to get in. Perhaps some short bolts with nuts will work to attach them, but be sure there are no sharp edges that could harm the chickens.

They are actually big buckets my dad cut so they can fit a chicken, what i didn’t know when I installed the nesting boxes was that my hen was gonna get this big and both of my other hens that are medium size hens have no problem getting into it😊 I agree with the ledge or shelf and will try and add some hopefully this weekend😊
Me too!! Hindsight is 20/20 😅 My girls did not like the ramp i installed but love the hops I replaced the ramp with. I also have a few nest box locations to keep it interesting but mostly for the lower ranking girls. They can always lay without being yelled at or harrased by the mean girls lol.
Your coop looks charming ♡ Bravo dad!
