how many 50# bags of feed to reach weight on broilers in 8 weeks +-?

How many chicks did you raise for the freezer, and how many bags of feed did you go through?

I am guessing like 50-100 birds total is what i'll have. But even if you just raised a dozen it would give me an idea.

Just as a rule of thumb, figure 2.2 lbs of feed for each lb of gain. So a 7 week old 8 lb bird will need 17.6 lbs of feed in its lifetime. Some use a little less and some a little more but over the years this has held true for us. So for 50 birds we go thru 4 bags of starter then between 13 and 15 bags of grower.

The latest figures is for 2006 from the National Chicken Council for the commercial Cornish X ... market age is 48 days with a market live weight of 5.47 pounds, and takeing 1.95 pounds of feed per 1 pound live weight gain. For any other breed all bets are off. The figures for 1925 when the dual purpose chickens were used prior to the development of the CornishX shows... age to market 112 days with a live weight of 2.5 lbs and required 4.7 pounds of feed for a 1 pound of live weight gain. I hope that this gives one an insight for expectations of production costs.
