How many birds in coop?

I have an 8x12 coop with 31 chickens, there is an attached 600sqft enclosed run for when the predators/weather is bad. But they free range from 6am to about 7-8pm depending on the time of year. If I had a 10x12 coop, I'd have 40 birds in it. But my weather is different than yours.

I’ve had somewhere around 12+ chickens in this coop for the past 2 years. I’ve noticed there’s so much space left and have been considering adding on to this particular laying flock for a while now.

Add another 6, see how it goes next winter.
I had one winter when I had too many, it was NOT fun, didn't go there again.
If your goal is eggs, add new layers each year, but also remove some.
