How many BYCers are College Students?

I'm a graduate student.

I received my B.A. in English with an emphasis in Secondary Education and graduated with honors from Grand Valley State University. My minor program was Spanish.

I am continuing my graduate work at Grand Valley, where I am studying for a degree in education with a K-12 Reading Specialist emphasis. My current career goal is to get out of the classroom so that I can be a literacy coach/consultant for a school district.

I would eventually like to enter a doctoral program in reading, likely at Michigan State.

I'm almost finished with my first year at Sierra College (Rocklin, CA) and planning to transfer to UC Davis in a another year or two.

My major is avian science/ornithology.

Also considering a minor or second degree in music.

I'm on spring break right now, which is very very nice!

Class hadnt started, my professor wasnt even there at the time. Think before speaking. Dont assume you know the whole story until you ask.

OEGBMan, I am not going to start a fight with you. Suffice it to say that I did think before posting and was working off your statement that you were in class at the time. That statement indicates that you were actually in class, meaning that class had started. I have had enough students play online in class to be really irritated by such behavior. Truthfully, your generation has a sweeping tendency to be rude and self-centered (admittedly a generalization on my part). I apologize if you are not in that group, but I'm afraid your peers have created an image that you will unfortunately have to work against.

(And before you paint me as an old and bitter, I should point out that I am relatively new to teaching. I came in with a very Polyanna attitude that my students would all want to learn and would all behave as adults. What I have discovered is that many are still wanting to be spoon fed and that many will not take responsibility for their education. Texting, cell phone use and online play during class are all indicitive of this juvenile attitude. My best students all have a personal work ethic that prevents such behavior and ensures that they get the most out of the classes that they are taking. Let's face it- tuition is so insanely high these days that it's foolish to waste even a second of class time. I try very hard to not waste my students' time or money. I expect the same respect from them.)

Again, my apologies if you are in the mature, hard-working group. I wish you only the best in your academic career.

Hi, no worries. Im sorry as well, I shouldn't have jumped your case like that, I can be a little hot headed sometimes.

As for being in the mature, hard-working group, I most definitely fall into that category. You can ask many of my good friends here on BYC. No need to look back on this, everyone has their moments and we just had ours. Now that its over, I appreciate you wishing me the best. Have a great day.

The best advice I can give is take different courses and "feel out" the different subjects. I changed my major so many times in undergrad with the idea that I HATED science. I took a geology class since it seemed the most interesting of the sciences classes that I could take for GE courses. Liked the class, but didn't think much beyond that since it was science. Had I been open to "feeling out" the subject, I probably could have saved myself several years of nonsense. I ended up spending 10 years on my bachelors degree. That geology class was during my freshman year of college and it wasn't until 6-1/2 years later than I came to the realization that I really enjoy geology. I am not suggesting take a geology class (though...ya never know!

)...I am just sharing my experience that began with being undecided.

Good luck! Hope you find your niche far sooner than I did!
