How many chances do you give a hatchery ?? When is it enough??

No I do not have a local hatchery *(we are the hatchery here

)* there are a few others who hatch out chicks around but like us just to sell locally or to keep. They do not have Buff Orps or White Rocks so I could not purchase from them. I have plenty of RIRs and a few Barr Rocks. We have a 360 egg incubator so if I could have gotten my shipped eggs to hatch I would not need to purchase ready made. I have read so many good things about the Buffs I just really wanted to give them a try. My husband has a thing for white chickens(*have no clue why) so I was getting some White Rocks for him.......this has been very dishearting and trying.

At this point, I'd be demanding my money back, and insisting they pay return shipping for the birds you already received. Go with someone else. That's ridiculous.

Of course, my husband lovingly refers to me as his "pit bull" when it comes to service problems. I ALWAYS get what I want from companies, even if it takes me going up the chain of command 15 times. XD

You are not required to ship dead chicks back to a hatchery as "evidence," although if they are all DOA you can refuse the package.

If you choose to give them a little burial, it probably wouldn't hurt to take a picture of the shipping box with them in it, although I have never heard of a hatchery asking for photos of dead chicks before. Maybe if you'd lost one, but weren't sure which breed it was...? Even then, they're more likely to ask for photos of the survivors, or just a description so they know how to credit you.

Make sure you report the loss within Ideal's deadline, whatever that is. hatcheries I've used have been 48 hours, I believe.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that; it must have been terrible to open that box.

Called them this morning when the postmaster called us to tell us our much awaited chicks had arrived but they were all dead. I really thought he was just trying to be funny and sadly he was not. He asked that we come and get them because they smelled terrible. My husband took them straight to the dump. He was not going to chance bringing any germs back here. When my husband called they said they would ship out replacement birds. I wish he would have just asked for a refund. I am not liking Ideal now at all!! Three strikes your out in baseball but man this is like kick me, run me over and then say would you like some more? We have a new pen built just for them and I was so looking forward to them and now I am almost dreading them. Sad isn't it?

This is a strange coincidence! Yesterday my much anticipated ducklings arrived (not from Ideal) and the post office called me and told me they were all dead. Luckily the post office disposed of the box for me, I didn't have to go pick it up.

yall aint alone,Got my 25 jersey giants today from meyer and all but 1 was dead.so dont think its just ideal.maybe too hot for them or something.I called and they said they would ship more next monday.kinda worried though cause a week later I am supposed to get 25 rir s too.I the next batch dont do good I think I will tell them to wai t till it cools down before sending anymore.

Wow! I am so sorry everyone is having such a hard time. I have never ordered chicks through the mail before and now I don't think I will for a LONG time. Goodness, you would think that these companies would get some Public Relations Standards in check.

I have not lost money on any chicks but I did almost lose money with paypal. This is off the chick topic but thought I would share because paypal was involved and was the problem. I had ordered my son a transport wheelchair online from a Walgreens store. I paid through Paypal with my debit card they have on file. Well the order did not register so I had to do it again. It still did not go through. So I decided to wait and order over the phone the next day. Well, I check my e-mail that night and there is almost $400.00 in charges! The order should not have costed more than $150.00! I called paypal who said that the order had been placed and I needed to call Walgreens and have the order cancelled. I called Walgreens.com and they said there was no order ever recieved. I called my bank and I was in the hole $200.00! ANd to make it worse, there was going to be over $200.00 in overdraft charges because Walgreens divided the charges into like 10 different things for only 2 items! I called paypal back and they said that the money was not actually gone from my account but that it was on hold and would be for 30 DAYS! We ended up calling the bank and talking to the account recorde person and she watched the account to make sure paypal could not get the money since there was never an order. Finally we got the Walgreens.com manager and the Paypal Manager together and got our money back. But we would have lost over $200.00 if we had not been diligent. In the end, to get the managers to talk we had to threaten to get a lawyer, I know it is petty and I am NOT the suing type, but the threat worked!
