I have 50+ chickens, which I don't think is that much, but when I tell other folks, they are usually surprised at the amount. What I think is a large amount of chickens is like 1,000 or more. What's a large sum to you?

about 50+

A lot to us is "more than our coop capacity".
Or when DH decides we have hatched enough for this year, which pretty well coincides with the coop/growout/brooder capacity.
And they are his chickens, so I say OK and stop hatching.
Of course, then two more went broody so they didn't count since we don't have to house them separately. Chicken Math, y'know.

over 100 but I'm in the 'burbs.
I can't build any more coops without taking up pasture space.
I usually have about 50 but they are in flocks of about 10 or so.

I say it depends on your set up. I have had as high as 55, but that was too much for my yard. They ended up stripping the yard of all vegetation. Now I have 30 as I have downsized and I have to replant the yard this spring which means I have to get a portable electric fence to pasture them til I get the chicken yard back in good shape.
