How many chickens can i have?

I understand your point of view pat. And by asking this question i ofcourse meant comfortably in my coop. I in NO way want to cram a bunch of chickens into a small coop. I just as a newbie wanted to know! Thanks

The "magic number question" is almost guaranteed with all newcomers to chickens... it's a rite of passage

It is good to have a ball park idea of how much space chickens require. Being new myself I just had no concept of how much space a chicken needs. I also thought that if I had 6 chickens I would surely get 6 eggs a day which we need as a minimum daily for our larger family just for breakfasts...not to mention baking, etc.
Soooo after we had the concrete footings poured of our 5x12 coop plus run I realized I needed more chickens and more space to ensure we got the number of eggs we needed without having to buy eggs from the store to supplement.
Free ranging is just not safe where I am so I am going to add a 8 X 6 run to the existing coop plus run and hope that my 6 pullets plus 10 tiny chicks will one day be happy in this combined space run space of 108 sq. feet. The hen house will remain the same at 4X5. They really only sleep in the house cuz the weather stays pretty much the same here all year.
I am dreaming of fencing in our property one day so that I could let my girls run loose for a few hours a day. That would be ideal. One day one day...

I'll give you a little info on your cat question. I have 4 outside cats. One of them is very wild and you can't even get near her. They are great at killing mice, moles, chipmunks, bunnies, and anything else they can catch. That being said, they don't bother any of our birds. They will lay outside the tractors and watch them play, we freerange in the evening and have not had any problems. I've had birds playing a foot away from cats, and the cats just lay there. I've never even seen on of them go into "stalking mode" on one of the chickens. I believe that if you keep them penned for a week or two to let the attack cats get used to them, then let them freerange for an hour or two in the evenings just so you can observe, you should be good. If you notice any problems, then you'll know that you can't freerange with your cats. Like I said, I've got vicious outside attack cats, and they never bother my girls.

I agree with teach. when i read your subject I LOL cause do you know who your asking about how many chickens you can have, " ADDICTS".

Even though the guidelines say 4 sq ft per bird. I like to think that they dont care and that 2 to 3 sq ft is fine to. So 20 to 30 chickens sounds good to me.
