I hope I'm posting this in the correct area! If not, my apologies!

I was just wondering... my coop is 6x6, will have a 12x12 run and the chicks will be able to free range as well. How many chickens could fit comfortably without being TOO crowded?

I have eight, one week old BLRW's and am hoping to add more to my flock already.

4 sq ft A BIRD so 6 x 6= 36 divided by 4=9 your can have 9 LF birds If you have a mix of banties and large more like 11 if you have all banties-more like 12-13 max...

enjoy:)

You've already hit your limit, if, if your flock gets caught indoors for any lengthy period of time, due to winter snows.

8 birds @ 8 square feet per bird = 64 square feet or 8'x8'. 6 birds @ 8 square feet per bird = 48 square ft.
Even in temperate climates, with occasional snow, I highly recommend 6 square feet per bird.

If you live in a warm climate and all the coop needs to provide is roosting space, then the question is how long are your roosts? I compute 8" of running length per large fowl. 8 large fowl birds should have 6-7 feet of roost.

Hope that helps.

Darn. Not the answer I was hoping for.

I guess that just means that DH needs to build me a second coop....... only bigger than the one I have now.
