How many chickens can live in this coop?

Since they really have limited time out and are kept in if you are out of town I think long term there could be issues.
If you have 1/2 acre and they DO go out for a few hours a day your neighbors likely know you have them.
I would recommend building an outdoor coop with run that can handle the number of chickens you are allowed to keep. A garage is a rather dark and cold place in the winter.
Chickens love to sunbathe and scratch in the dirt. Not really fair to keep them in the garage.

I know that even my most docile birds get rather cranky when I am simply tardy opening the pop doors.

would predators be a problem? also, we have squirrels, they used to eat the food. mostly, i am worried about mornings when they sing "the egg song"

how early to let them out?

Thanks!!!

I have predators around. I took that into considderation when building my coop and run. A properly built run will withstand predator attempts.
Lots of cool options in the coop and run section.
The coop can be super cute while being strong too.
An easy to construct and reasonably inexpensive run idea is the hog panel hoop run.

This is one we built to house some rescue hens. No posts needed as the hog panels are very strong.
My main coop is much larger and has a huge run. I am in the middle of town by the way.

No complaints about the hens and the egg song even after over 6 years. There are 21 hens here so lots of singing or complaining if I am tardy.

Dustbathing is a glorious thing. Just ask Cricket...... If she ever finishes.

Oh and I let mine out at the crack of dawn.

wait... i thought it was 4sqft a bird? am i wrong?
That's if you have a run for them to use during their daylight hours, or if they are able to be out free ranging all day, every day. Keeping them shut in a 4 s.f./bird coop all but "the few hours they get out into the yard/day" is closer to factory farming conditions.
