How many chickens did you start with and when?

I started out with 1 Brown Leghorn rooster i got in july, then i got 3 pullets about two weeks after, a Black star, RIR, and a Australorp, then i got a Easter Egger in August.
Then i found what looks like a Cuckoo Marans hen walking down my street, so i kept her, and im getting a White Silkie this wednesday

, so thats 1 roo and 5 hens plus 1 more hen = 7 chickens total

Started in May of 2008 with 8 hens and 1 rooster. Still have all of those girls(not the roo) and have added a LOT more chickens(now have about 50) and 14 ducks.

Started out with 4 (3 BR pullets & 1 RIR roo) a friend gave to me in August 09. Bought 15 BR chicks in September 09. Bought 35 in March 10' all different breed. Gave a few roos away, lost a few of pullets to unknown deaths then got another 4 a friend hatched. Now I have a total 49. 46 pullets & 3 roos!!

Will hatch some for meat birds the begining of the year!!

When I initially brought up the idea of chickens to my DH, he agreed & we settled on 6 chicks as being a good number for the 2 of use, plus some for Mom & brother. Then the number went to 6 so he could give some to a friend of his who has shared eggs with us in the past. The friend had to give up his chickens due to health reasons.

So, I went to get 6 little RIR chicks, but thought I better get 8 since probably 2 would die on a newbie like me. Now, all 8 are as healthy as can be, and I'm wondering if they can all fir in a coop & run designed for 6, or should I try to sell/give 2 of them away. I have a feeling that we'll be keeping all 8 chickens. I think I've grown pretty attached to all 8 of them, even though I've only had them for 3 weeks.

Saw an article about raising a backyard flock in Organic Gardening, January 1993. Asked DH pretty please & he built an 8 by 8 coop. Ordered 12 Barred Rocks from local store. Had 3 roos & 9 hens. Ended up with 1 roo and 9 hens in the end. Sons (4 &6 at the time) made pets out of 2 of them. The article had everything in it that I needed to know & it's going on 18 years & I've never looked back. Got a second portable coop in 2009 (Thanks DH) and have bantams in that. 1st coop got a new door this year & a sliding pop door, but other than that is going strong. Hope to always have chickens.

I had my first flock of leghorns when I was five. They were originally my grandmothers but I fell in love with them and kinda took them over. I have kept chickens off and on throughout the years. Mostly barred rocks and leghorns. Last year I started getting several different breeds and breeding my own. I am happiest when I have chickens in my life.

We started with Call Ducks. This month we decided on Silkie Chickens. We have 14 hens
and one Rooster. Rooster Ruscello Hens named 5 to date: Carmen Violeta (Golden Gem) Juliette
Armida Aria (Black Beauty)
