how many chickens i really need advice

can i fit into an 8x4 coop it is 5 ft tall this coop will be just to lay or roost in

eight to ten comfortably. have fun.

Eight to ten, assuming they have a good-sized run as well. (Even if you are planning on freeranging, it is *really really* worthwhile building a run, for times when they cannot safely be out or for times when you won't be home at nightfall to lock them into their coop).

Some people would go as much as 16. But the more you crowd them in the more likely you are to have problems with picking, cannibalism, disease etc... or in a totally freerange situation, with some of the flock deciding to spend the night outdoors and getting themselves et by predators.

If you use the 3-4 foot per sq feet per bird that would be about 8 - 10 hens.
