How many chickens per nesting box?

And a very good question indeed.

For those with nest 'crowding' or waiting in line.....fake eggs/golf balls kept in the nests at all times can help 'spread the love'.
"Can" being the key word. <sigh> Now @aart do you really think my chickens are that smart? Took the fake eggs out because they'd toss them out onto the floor

I have 17 hens and 6 laying boxes... they use 2 of them :) 3 on occasion...

Quote: @Blooie you have to outsmart the chickens....high fronts on the nests, heavy fake eggs or golf balls.

I have 14 layers and 4 nests.....all 4 nests get used most day.

One nest is missing from "the bank". It's in the brooder pen in the run with a broody hen and her eggs in it.
I can see how easily fake, or real, eggs could come out of those nests....bummer.

My coop is quite large. It is a wooden shed we turned into a coop
How large is 'quite'? :D feet by feet.

Quote: Hmmm....I've only had one fake egg tossed out of nests in 2.5 years...no telling with live animals<shrugs>.
I use the hard plastic ones from TSC, they weight almost the same as a real egg(I've put them in the basket before haha) as well as golf balls.
