How many chickens? What kind?

Thanks for your input especially about the Faverolles. They were originally at the very top of my list but now I'm super torn because I've been doing some more reading about them being super dumb, not great layers, and the difference in quality between those from hatcheries vs breeders (vs with other breeds). I'm torn because I really thought they might be my spirit chicken but now I'm not sure...
MyPetChicken carries a Favarolles hybrid that is better on all counts except purity for breeding. They call it a Favaucana, so is crossed with the Ameraucana, I think. Since the blue egg allele is dominant, even with just the one from the Ameraucana parent, she will lay blue eggs.

My all time favorite hen since starting my flock after Covid hit, is my local feed store's Crested Cream Legbar, Melody. She has a perfect disposition, very curious and friendly, and lays a massive light blue egg I think 5 or 6 a week in her first two seasons! The other breed that is good in most climates and very friendly is the Barred Plymouth Rock, (or other variety of Rock) who lays a usually large brown or pinkish egg. I have a highly mixed flock in very hot & dry summer California zone 9B, and carefully chose breeds in the moderate docility range that get along with other breeds well. Climate considerations FIRST, then pick your breeds. And all at once will be much easier, since adding to an existing pecking order is where problems come up.

A single rooster, after they come into lay, or growing up with them as chicks can be a great help in lowering the hens' developing bossiness. He will calm down any heavy fighting that can occur with any breed. But most recommend waiting till established to add a rooster, once you have more experience. You cannot completely predict any breed roo's personality, and will have to deal with him if he turns out to be too aggressive or attack you! Lots of vids online at how to raise a calmer roo or tame one who gets aggressive. They all get aggressive as they come into maturity, so watch and wait?
