How many chicks is too many- for mama Silkie

I have a broody Silkie fostering some of my layer chicks. I originally gave her 3 chicks, and have now added 2 more (they are a week old at this point). I have 4 more layer chicks that I need to separate from the Meaties (those guys are huge, and I worry about the smaller chicks. Can I put the other 4 chicks with her (for a total of 9 chicks) or should I put them in a different brooder?

A lot will depend upon what the lower temperatures that you may be experiencing. There are only so many chicks that a hen can keep covered if that is necessary in your part of Ca.

The coldest it should be in the next week or so is 35 degrees. Would it be better If I put a heat light over her nest?
