Friends, neighbors and people who buy eggs from me return their cartons and donate their grocery store cartons during the winter when my girls are taking their cold weather vacation.

Anyone who gets eggs from me gets a printout that explains about the possibility of bacteria on used cartons and the need to wash eggs before use (because I don't wash the
eggs before sale), but no one seems overly concerned. In today's world, a used egg carton doesn't seem too threatening, I guess.

I store eggs for my own use in reusable hard plastic cartons I can wash.
Speaking of used egg cartons, a friend who works for the Missouri Agriculture Department told me some years ago that the styrofoam and plastic egg containers could be washed with dishwater and a soft brush to clean them, but the pressed paper ones could be microwaved for a minute to kill bio-stuff you don't want.

I have been doing that ever since.

I have a couple dozen cartons in my craft cupboards for whenever I give some eggs to friends, but I keep all my eggs in a woven basket on my kitchen island. I also only get 3 eggs a day since my other 4 chickens aren’t old enough to lay. So all the cartons I buy I keep just incase ;)
