How many eggs can a goose hatch?

My one year old Pilgrim trio just hatched two goslings, doing well. However, when the mamas finally abandoned the remaining eggs, I found 20! unhatched eggs. I had been keeping their clutch down to 7-10, but they would stop sitting, maybe because I touched the eggs? Or maybe because they really wanted to have a clutch of 22? Or because they are a bit young? Or because it was two females and they both want a clutch of 10?

Any thoughts?
Of the 20 that didn’t make it, there were maybe 8-10 that looked fully formed, no success at pipping. The shells are So So hard! I have to break them open with a rock or tool. Is this why more didn’t hatch? Should I offer less oyster shell??

Just hoping to help them along next year if I can.
