How many eggs can I fit under my broody cochin hen?

My cochin has gone broody and I want to order some silkie eggs for her to hatch out. How many do you think she could comfortably sit on? Also, she has built her next out of hay I have in the laying box. Should I put anything else down to keep the eggs safe? Thank you in advance.

Is she a large fowl or a bantam Cochin? A bantam cochin should be able to easily cover 8 silky eggs. A large fowl could handle 15 or so. I love hay as a nest material. Make sure that your hen is mite and louse free, and monitor her during the brooding process. good luck.

She is a bantam. Thank you for the info! Hopefully by the end of the week I'll have fertile eggs and a happy broody mama!
