How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Same here, poor wee gals, they look so sad and unwell - I always feel they are like a teething baby when they moult. I sometime will give 1/2 a low dose aspirin if they are really not coping. Does wonders to perk them up. I want them eating and drinking!
Our light Brahmas just look pitiful! They seem to be doing ok though! Since I switched to Kalmbach Flock maker feed with 20 % protein they get through it a bit quicker! I may try the aspirin if I have any struggling! 🙂

I have been making my morning porridge with 20% chick starter half and half with my layer pellets.

They go gaga over it, the protein content makes it around 18.5% with the starter. We don’t have the variety up here you do down there, but it’s easy to mix in a higher supplement if need be. I have used a 30% protein supplement in the past, but they prefer the chick starter mix. It’s. Purina Gold’n Starter and it smells soooo good!

I also feed a textured 17% layer Purina Layena they go nuts over, but I try to limit that, they will eat all the grains and leave the pellets sometimes. But it smells so good also so they pretty much clean that up.

And of course there isn’t a spider or bug within 2’ of the barn floor! 😉😁

Edit - I should clarify that’s it’s the porridge I make for the chooks, not mine hahaha! Hot water on their pellets makes a nice warm mash for them

I feed wet mash every morning and afternoon! I have noticed a big difference since I switched to Kalmbach Flock maker with oyster shell on the side free choice! They really do enjoy it! Must be something about chick starter and flock maker. It all smells almost good enough to eat! 😂

I am sure it has molasses in my feed, it smells like my horses’ pellets which has molasses in it.

It’s good in the winter having the warm morning mash. They really enjoy it.

Our birds clean it up their warm mash pretty quickly too! Kalmback smells kinda like pizza! I wonder if they add oregano! 😂

Yep the Layer Pellet I have is like that, I think they add that to the feed - I read it somewhere. The birds like it at any rate and eat it up.

I got 5 today, 4 of them were brown eggs which means at least 4 of my six standard hen are now laying, only 1 of them was a bantam egg. My Dotty has definitely gone broody hasn’t gotten out of the lay box since I posted last and sitting on all the eggs.

Holly (silkie pullet) has been broody forever… she and her mum cobroodied 4 chicks which are 13 weeks now. They both ditched the kids at around 8 weeks, and my old silkie hen Marty who has never raised chicks stepped in to care for them.

Meanwhile Holly went broody again about 4 weeks ago. I refuse her entry to her favourite nest box - just a simple cardboard box she loves. So she sits on the roosting ledge all day. What a brat! She’s been broody since she laid her first egg!

Good thing she’s cute and friendly as can be. Otherwise I’d clobber her haha!
