How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Quote:
Jim,My older comets are doing the same thing,I think it may be due to age, they are going into their third season of laying and the eggs are bigger but fewer.I'm not sure who is laying and who is not at this time or I would cull the slackers,I am getting 6/7 eggs from the older ones but I was getting 10/11 and when they first started laying it was 12/12 daily

Max, when we first brought in our pullets from Shooks we placed colored bands on each one so we could track who was who. However, last year several of the Gals started showing significant swelling around the foot area and some were limping that we attributed to the bands. When we took them off they went back to normal. Now we don't know who's who. The first 6 are now 2 years old as of January and the rest are broken down into 6 month intervals of 6, 7, and 11. I know we're going to have to cull after this year but I don't know who now. Based on seeing some white on them and feathers here and there around the run and in the yard I believe we do have several in molt which would account for the lower egg production. Hopefully they'll be back to full production in a few weeks. Hopefully...

When the time comes to start culling I'm not sure what we're going to do. Both of us being vegetarians we have strong feelings against slaughtering them but we know they will be a financial burden if we keep them. A friend said he'd take them and house them in his freezer but that's just removing the responsibility from our shoulders. I've thought maybe just building another coop and let the older ones that are past laying age free range all day. We'd probably still get a few eggs each day from them for some times after that. It would work for me but they'd still have to deal with hawks, foxes, and coyotes.

Anyone want to chime in here?
