How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I have a digital scale that I weigh garden veggies, food for recipes and the girl's eggs. I had it long before I got chickens. It reads either grams or ounces. It is fun and it takes so little time.

The girls made up for shorting me 1 egg yesterday with 9 eggs today!

I just remembered that I too have a digital scale...but how do I know which size weighs what?

My girls in my chicken tractor were 5/5 today. My pullets flew the coop before I could put the gate up and so I only had 3 out of 10!!! that left me eggs. I can see myself finding a hidden pile sometime soon. GRUMBLE!

Chicken eggs are graded by size, for the purpose of sales. The United States Department of Agriculture sizing is based by weight per dozen.[1] The most common US size of chicken egg is 'Large' and is the egg size commonly referred to for recipes. The following egg masses have been calculated on the basis of the USDA sizing:
Modern Sizes (USA)
Size Mass per egg Cooking Yield (Volume)[2]
Jumbo Greater than 2.5 oz. or 71 g
Very Large or Extra-Large (XL) Greater than 2.25 oz. or 64 g 56 mL (4 tbsp)
Large (L) Greater than 2 oz. or 57 g 46 mL (3.25 tbsp)
Medium (M) Greater than 1.75 oz. or 50 g 43 mL (3 tbsp)
Small (S) Greater than 1.5 oz. or 43 g
Peewee Greater than 1.25 oz. or 35 g

13 from 16 yesterday...my first more-than-a-dozen day from my 26 week old flock.

I have a perfect example this week of why I tally my eggs up and average them out. I've been getting about a dozen a day consistently for the past couple of weeks. Sometimes a couple more, sometimes a couple less. This week so far my tally has been: Day 1: 13 Day 2: 15 Day 3: 9

Getting only 9 eggs on day 3 would have seemed like an alarming drop in production, except that when I average it out, it comes to 12 1/3rd eggs each of the three days, which is in keeping with my usual average of late. A lot of girls took breaks yesterday! lol

P.S. RHOISE: thanks for the chart! I'll be saving that! :D

For the month of October, which is the first full month of laying for our pullets, we averaged nearly 6 eggs per day. Going by the average, we had each pullet lay just over 1 egg every other day. In the last week of October however, using only the numbers from the last week, the lay factor (average eggs laid per day divided by the number of hens laying) was much better at 7 eggs per day. Not too bad for newly laying pullets. The eggs are averaging on the low side of medium, however a couple are nearly at the large size weight.

Thanks Rhodes and chickenwalker for those guidelines.
8 eggs again today . I had an abundance of eggs waiting in my fridge (45) my daughter in law needed 40 eggs to make the cupcakes for my Granddaughter, Morgans, birthday. Today Morgan turned 1 year old, what a fantastic year this has been! She is a beautiful blessing!
