How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Uh oh... had two delinquents today... the two that took yesterday off...

So... instead of the 5 I was expecting today, I only got 3... And so... I predict 3 tomorrow... this counts the two that did not lay today (surely they won't take 3 days in a row), and the EE that laid at 11:15 today...

It's been super cold at night for the last couple of days, so I'm hoping that's all it is. If they miss again, I will be looking for some other problem.

I finally succeeded in finding a pattern in my 4 hens egg laying. But, just when I think I have it figured out they change things up! I got an egg today but from the wrong bird and since she laid I should have technically gotten 2 but that was not the case......

Bruce,

See the pic at the top right of this page showing a lady holding four mega eggs.

Not sure which picture you are referencing as there are no pictures.

Could be because I have the Golden Feather membership. One advantage is you don't have to see all the ads and some other stuff which make this website bring my computer almost to it's knees. It doesn't have the processor power/memory to deal with all that is going on. NO other website I visit does that.

But the primary reason I got the GF is I know I have gotten many, MANY multiples of the $25 cost in assistance and education from the website and thought it deserved to be supported.

Well, since they aren't machines, I guess we can't expect too much precision.

I got 8 Sunday, 7 Monday, 3 Tuesday and 5 Wednesday.

I really can't come up with a pattern for any of the girls.
- Zorra (Black Australorp) has now laid 12 days straight and 13 of the 14 days since she started laying on 1/3. Clearly she is not on a 26 hour cycle.
- The other BA started very consistently with 2 on then 1 off but after a bunch of "what the heck" sporatic laying, she started 12/31 with 6 on, 1 off, 3 on, 2 off, 3 on, 1 off, 1 on.
- One of my EEs laid 1/10 through 1/14 and didn't lay the last two days.
- The other EE had an 11 day streak from 12/25 through 1/4, took 1/5 off then laid 2 days, took a day off, then laid 4 in a row and took yesterday off.

So, at least for my girls and at least this time of year (their first winter), I have NO idea how may eggs to expect on a given day.
What I DO know is they were SO HAPPY with the January thaw. Spent a lot of time outside Sunday finding grass where the snow had been cleared prior to the thaw. I had the "coop exit Tsunami" on Monday (kinda usual) but instead of stopping inside the barn door where they normally get morning treats, most of them shot right out the door to the field. It was another happy chicken day. They were all over the place all day long because almost all of the snow had melted. Bet they were bummed yesterday when it snowed a bit. Probably spent the day in the barn.

buncha stuff

Yeah, VT winters are normally more predictable in terms of weather... it's either cold or snowy from November through March... Down here in Kansas City... it's completely bizarre... For example, last week, monday through Friday, we were all above freezing Friday was in the 60's!...in January! Then up til yesterday we were below freezing... I'm talking morning lows in the single digits and teens... And today, already it's 45 degrees and it's not even noon yet... And we won't see temps below 28 degrees until sunday when we won't see highs above freezing... but then monday and tuesday are going to hit us with morning lows in the teens again... it's so crazy...

I went ahead and opened up coop windows today... the outer walls of the coop are pretty warm to the touch, so... there's no sense in not directing any of that inside. The thermometer up by their roost is already reading a full 3 degrees higher than it was before I propped out the windows...

But I haven't gotten any eggs yet today... which is unusual... And the only girl sitting in the nest is the EE who laid yesterday at 1... if she is going to lay today, it shouldn't be until nearly 4.

They are 35 weeks old... could this be the beginning of the 9 month mini-molt I've read about?? Hmm...

Even though its been cold and rainy here in NC for really the last week and a half, I am still getting my 3 eggs a day. I have gotten 4 a couple of days from my 4 laying hens, But i will not complain. Weather man says that we could possibly get 3-5 inches of snow here tonight. Hope the girls wont go on strike tomorrow and leave me with nothing

Mini moult at 35 weeks ?!?!?!?
(thinking cap on)
Mid June hatch to mid-January = 6 months = 26 weeks
35 weeks - 26 weeks = 7 weeks
Mid January + 7 weeks = 1st week of March
So when it finally starts to warm up and we near 12 hours of natural light a day, my girls are going to moult and stop laying?

5 eggs again today, including Zorra for the 13th day in a row and it was a MONSTER 82 gram egg! Gotta be a double yolk. That plus the Faverolles's 40 g egg makes 2 large with 3 yolks

AGAIN the BAs and EEs are leading the pack, all 4 laid today. Anybody wants to know which chickens lay well in the winter? Black Australorps and Easter Eggers! Of course, now that I've said that out loud (as it were) I've probably jinxed it and they will stop laying

Loved the way you summarized my text, very concise and accurate
