Not sure where else to put this, as I'm pretty new here, but I got my first and second egg today.

I have 5 girls. Wilco called them Novogens, but I can't find any info on that breed. I think it's a cross, but don't know exactly what the cross is.

They are just about 17 weeks old. This last week I noticed 2 of them have bright red Combs now, a few are really talking up a storm at times and when I walk up to them they've started squatting in front of me.

So this evening I went into their run to give some blueberries and 4/5 came running up, but Voilet stayed under the hedge in the shade. I coaxed her out, but she was panting and not looking or moving right. Got her into the tractor, but she wouldn't touch the water or any blueberries I tossed in for her.

She just kept panting and pooping. Finally she laid the egg while standing in the grass and stopped panting, but then stepped on it. The shell was super soft. 20 mins later, she did it again. That shell was soft too, but I grabbed it before she could step on it.

Thank goodness I was able to observe this and clean up after her. Poor girl. She finally went up to the roosts and climbed into the nesting box. I checked on her after dark and she was still snuggled in the nesting box, but not panting and seemed ok.

I'm getting some laying pellets and oyster shells tomorrow...and prob a ceramic egg so they might start using the nesting box. Just didn't expect this to happen for a few more weeks...

It's common for new layers to lay anywhere, anytime. They are learning the laying process.
You will get some soft shells, and malformed eggs in the beginning.
Mix the pellets with the crumbles 50/50 for a couple of weeks. And toss a small amount of pellets on dry ground as a treat. To get them used to the pellets. GC

I got 11/14 eggs the day before yesterday, and then 13/14 yesterday. So I guess I have more girls laying than I thought, or a bunch of first eggs. So one more to go, Savannah. At least I've never seen her lay an egg, but that doesn't mean anything lol. Yesterday I did get a humongous egg from Camillia. It barely fit in the egg carton; I just feel bad she had to lay it. But I am hoping it'll be my second double yolk.
